Queenstown Gardens

This area was declared a Reserve in 1866 when it was treeless. The two oaks at the entrance were planted by Queenstown's first Mayor J W "Daddy' Robertson, and nurseryman McConnochie. There are many fine specimen trees, and an extensive rose garden. Walkers will find two main memorials: one to William Rees, the founder of Queenstown, and the other to English explorer Robert Falcon Scott and his companions who perished on their way back from the South Pole in 1912. At the town end of the Gardens are the Memorial Gates erected to commemorate local men who died in the First World War.
